FAQ

Here are some of the questions I often get and the answers to them:

Is he still a puppy?
No, Roope is no longer a puppy (and I tell Roopes age). It seems that Roope behaves so puppy-like that many people think that he is a puppy. We hear this question almost weekly when we are on our walks.

Will he still grow?
No, Roope does not grow anymore.

What kind of hobbies do Roope and you have?
At the moment we go in agility and eagerly participate in the Pirkanmaa district activities of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of Finland. Often we go on walks in the woods where Roope can run free.

How many hours a day is Roope alone?
Approximately four hours. At the maximum he is alone for six hours.

Has Roope done lots of bad things or broken anything?
duvet cover Roope has been one very good Russell. He hasn't broken anything bigger, except for the TV's on/off button when he was little.
And he has torn a few pillow cases and a duvet cover.
And he has chewed a bit off the bedpost and one of the legs of the living-room table.

Does Roope get along with children?
Roope likes children. When he was little, he often stopped next to children to be scratched and would have loved to join their play. Now he doesn't always have patience to stop.

Does Roope get along with other dogs?
Usually he gets very well along with other dogs. But even Roope does not like all dogs. But it's not like he especially hates other males.

You probably don't have to take long walks with Roope because he is so small?
Even though Roope is small, he has a lot of energy and he is able to take really long walks. At times when we come back from our 1,5 hours long walk in the woods Roope still wants to play! And his condition gets better when we walk, so it is difficult to tire Roope with walks only. We also do all kinds of activation tasks: I hide treats in rooms and Roope finds them, all small cardboard boxes are good hiding places which can then be ripped open, we train tricks etc.

Is Roope of the same breed as Jeppe (the dog in the Olvi beer commercial)?
No. The dog in the Olvi commercial is a smooth fox terrier.

Is Roope a purebred dog and what breed is he?
Roope is a Jack Russell Terrier. The FCI approved Jack Russell Terrier as a breed on 1 January 2001 and the Finnish Kennel Club on February 2001. Russells are in a special registry of the Kennel Club and get red and white registration papers.

Were Russell's tails sometimes docked?
Yes, but now docking is prohibited in the Finnish law. After 1 January 2001 dogs with docked tails cannot enter in shows, agility competitions, obedience competitions, character testing, cave testing, trail testing etc.

How is Jack Russell Terrier different from Parson Russell or "Working Russell"?
The Jack Russell's height is about 25-30 centimetres, of which half is "legs" and half "chest". His length at the back from withers to tail is slightly longer than his height. Parson Russell's ideal height at the withers is 36 centimetres (males) or 33 centimetres (bitches). Physique is different too. The height of the "Working Russell" is between 25,5 and 38 centimetres and the length must be in proportion with the height. This breed is not registered at the Kennel Club.
Sometimes somebody has erroneously thought that Roope is a Jack Russell, not a Parson Russell, because of his dark colouring.

Does a russell fit in a block of flats?
We live in a block of flats, so I think that they do. Russells need a lot of exercise, both physical and mental.

* Have you heard that russells will destroy your house?
Puuhaleluja: Dog Spinny, Kong, yms. This is not necessarily true. A russell is a very energetic dog that is quick to learn new things. If a russell gets bored, it might start destroying things and terrorising people.
A russell can be activated with different tricks. Instructions on how to teach tricks to a dog can be found in dog books. Some pet shops also sell different activation toys, such as Activity Balls, Dog Spinnies and Kongs.
Small, empty cardboard boxes are also good. Place something delicious into a box and let the dog open or more likely rip the box. This can get messy, but mess can be cleaned. The cardboards of toilet paper or kitchen towel rolls are also good for activation. Place a treat inside and fold the ends. You can also hide treats in your house and ask the dog to find them. In the beginning it is best not to hide the treats too well so that the dog finds them easily.
Long walks are not a good way to get a russell "tired", because as the dog gets into shape, it needs even longer walks to become tired.

Hotlinking means that you put on your website the direct URL of an image that is on the server of the Pikku-Ukon sivut website (for instance, http://www.pikku-ukko.net/banneri2.gif). In such a case, the image will be loaded directly from the server of Pikku—Ukon sivut website, which exhausts the visitor capacity of the server.
If this explanation didn’t help you to figure out what hotlinking is, there is plenty of information available on the Internet that you can find by googling! (Hotlinking, Bandwidth stealing)

Who???
I think it may be time to introduce you to the webmistress :)
My name is Vuokko. At the moment we are living in Kangasala, near Tampere. My family consists of a boyfriend and a Jack Russell terrier named Roope. According to an old saying it is not proper to ask a woman her age... so let’s just say I am old or young enough.
Quite often I am asked what do I do for living...
I lathe biodegrading surgical implants. In practice these are small screws that are needed for example in fixing broken bones etc.
